 Arai Jungle School

Arai school is located in Tanut village, Presphos commune, Koas Krala district in the north-west of Cambodia. It is about 70 kilometers from Battambang town. It takes about 2 hours and half to be at school. There are 116 families, 498 populations (222 female). Most people in the village are farmers. They do cassava farm, corn farm, rice farm, feed cows and work for other people for daily income. The normal daily pay is $6.25 and $7.5 depend on kind of work. Most families have sent their family members to work in Thailand and other province in Cambodia as well.  Poverty is widespread in the district. Landlessness and lack of physical and economic assets are common, making families dependent on wage labor to generate income. Migration for work, both within Cambodia and to nearby Thailand, is a common coping strategy and can also negatively affect children’s schooling when families withdraw children from school for a period of time or move to area where relevant educational opportunities are limited.

In Arai school, there are totally 90 students (42girls). The mount of student increases every year. There are 4 teachers (1 female). But the only two are graduated from Teacher training center in Battambang. The other two are chosen from the village to be contract teachers.

Arai school has the old wooden school buildings which is required to be repaired/ fixed and painted. The side of roof is damaged by big wing and school seem to fall apart. Damage on the wall creates the difficulty in decorating each classroom and also not good look. The windows are broken. We can see through into the classroom by broken window. The poor condition of the school buildings is not in the situation of requiring for replacement but it is required only for the reparation and repainting even the teacher demands for the new building.

Arai school has no waste oven where they can burn the waste in safe and to keep the school in clean for the good environment.

Arai school has no garden which can be interested study place for students and family to send their children to school.

Arai school lack of garden material and lack of solar penal to use at night time and kitchen material for teachers.

Arai school has no library or kindergarten building which they need to enhance quality of education.
